DESCRIPTION:Come and connect with others who are interested in working on plans to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States in 2026.  \nThis monthly meeting space on the 4th Wednesdays is dedicated for those who would like the opportunity to connect\, collaborate\, and work on projects that align with Vermont’s 250th Anniversary Commission’s mission to  “…inspire all Vermonters to learn from the history\, legacy\, and context of the past to build strong Vermont communities for the future.”  \nThe space is being hosted by Brooks Memorial Library\, Vermont Independent Media (The Commons) and Windham World Affairs Council\, with support from the Vermont Humanities Council. We are already working together on a collaboration entitled\, ‘Examining American Identity and Leadership in a Changing World – and have have joined America 250\, a national initiative asking communities to plan for how to commemorate the 250th year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Its mission is to provide opportunities for all Americans to pause and reflect on our nation’s past & present\, honor the contributions of all Americans\, and look to the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.

DESCRIPTION:In this final speaker series program co-hosted with Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center (BEEC)\, David Allen Sibley\, renowned ornithologist and illustrator\, invites backyard birders to step into the world of scientific discovery. While birdwatching is often seen as a leisurely hobby\, Sibley will reveal how everyday observations can contribute to cutting-edge science. Sibley will explore the exciting and often overlooked mysteries surrounding even the most common bird species. \nDrawing from his own work and experience\, Sibley will illustrate how birders can develop a deeper connection to the birds around them by becoming “scientists in their own backyards.” He’ll share examples of how birding has led to surprising discoveries\, such as new migration routes or shifts in species distribution caused by climate change. Sibley will stress the importance of collaboration in the birding community\, showing how every observation matters and how collectively\, birders are helping to build a richer\, more comprehensive understanding of bird life. \nIn the end\, Sibley’s talk will not only encourage birders to look at their backyard birds with fresh eyes\, but also inspire them to become active participants in the ongoing work to protect these fascinating creatures and the habitats they rely on. \nThe Sibley Guide to Birds\, published in 2000\, was the realization of a lifelong dream for David Allen Sibley\, who began painting birds when he was seven years old and has continued painting them for over three decades. The Sibley Guide to Birds contains over 6\,600 original illustrations by Sibley\, now recognized as America’s leading ornithologist/illustrator. The Sibley Guide to Birds became the fastest-selling bird book in history\, earning Sibley the moniker “the Beatle of birding” among the press. Stories about Sibley have run in The New York Times\, Audubon\, Time\, and Science\, and the author has appeared on ABC World News Tonight and on NPR’s Science Friday and The Connection. DESCRIPTION:Come and connect with others who are interested in working on plans to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States in 2026.  \nThis monthly meeting space on the 4th Wednesdays is dedicated for those who would like the opportunity to connect\, collaborate\, and work on projects that align with Vermont’s 250th Anniversary Commission’s mission to  “…inspire all Vermonters to learn from the history\, legacy\, and context of the past to build strong Vermont communities for the future.”  \nThe space is being hosted by Brooks Memorial Library\, Vermont Independent Media (The Commons) and Windham World Affairs Council\, with support from the Vermont Humanities Council. We are already working together on a collaboration entitled\, ‘Examining American Identity and Leadership in a Changing World – and have have joined America 250\, a national initiative asking communities to plan for how to commemorate the 250th year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Its mission is to provide opportunities for all Americans to pause and reflect on our nation’s past & present\, honor the contributions of all Americans\, and look to the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.

DESCRIPTION:The Nelson Legacy project invites you to a listening event “Eyes on Freedom”\, a one-hour audio documentary about Wally & Juanita Nelson produced by Carrie and Michael Kline of “Talking Across the Lines”. \n“Eyes on Freedom” is an audio tapestry that weaves together voices of people who knew and were influenced by the Nelsons. The audio documentary also includes vintage recordings of the Nelsons themselves.  \nAfter decades of involvement in the civil rights and antiwar movements\, Wally and Juanita Nelson lived just south of the Vermont border in Franklin County\, Massachusetts starting in 1974. They lived there until Wally died in 2002 and Juanita in 2015. They had a significant impact on our region through their advocacy of local agriculture\, land trusts\, war tax refusal\, and simple living.  \nNonviolence was the umbrella concept that underscored everything they did. For the Nelsons\, nonviolence represented so much more than a tactic to be used in a conflict situation. While it could include freedom rides\, boycotts\, lunch counter sit-ins\, war tax refusal\, and other forms of noncooperation\, it was also a way of life\, a way of being in the world\, a way of relating to people and to all of nature. It was a measuring stick they used to evaluate their actions and choices.
