SUMMARY:First Wednesdays : The Poetics of Girlhood and Womanhood in America
DESCRIPTION:Poets and writers Diana Whitney and Shanta Lee Gander join Christal Brown\, associate professor of Dance at Middlebury College\, in a conversation that explores how girlhood and womanhood in America are manifested across the boundaries of poetry\, dance\, and lived experience. \nAbout the Presenters\nDiana Whitney’s edited work\, You Don’t Have to Be Everything: Poems for Girls Becoming Themselves\, ranges across intersectional\, intergenerational\, and gender-fluid voices. \nIn GHETTOCLAUSTROPHOBIA: Dreamin of Mama While Trying to Speak Woman in Woke Tongues\, Shanta Lee Gander navigates between formal and vernacular styles to examine butterflies and female sexuality\, vulnerability\, classical Greek myths\, and more. \nChristal Brown’s original dance piece “The Opulence of Integrity” was inspired by the public life and inner searching of Muhammad Ali\, boxing’s outspoken superstar. \nPartner: Middlebury College and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. \nUnderwriter: Anne Commire Fund for Women in the Humanities \nSponsored by The Friends of the Brooks Memorial Library. \nTo learn more\, please visit: \nThe Poetics of Girlhood and Womanhood in America

SUMMARY:Real Democracy: Tim Kipp and Friends
DESCRIPTION:REAL DEMOCRACY  \nwith Tim Kipp and friends \nBrattleboro Democracy Forum  \nat Brooks Memorial Library  \n and on Zoom \n6:30 pm\, Tuesday\, April 12th\, 2022\, \nThe meeting will be recorded and will air on BCTV and WVEW-FM \n  \nThe meeting at the library will be in the Community Meeting Room located on the 2nd floor\, just inside the rear entrance from the Municipal Center parking lot.   \nTo join the Zoom meeting click on this URL on the 12th: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84518553496?pwd=NldqT093NWxxUWxIVWR2N0V5NkQ4UT09 \n  \nTim says: \nThe United States is in a crisis of two nations.  Economic instability\, racial reckoning\, a lingering pandemic and rising authoritarianism divide Americans by a gulf not experienced since the Civil War. \nUnderlying this disunion are conflicting concepts of what democracy actually is or should be. The old consensus is crumbling. Today for some\, physically attacking the nation’s capitol makes sense\, for others\, making it harder for people to vote is a democratic act.  \nOn the other hand many still believe in citizen responsibility in the political process. For these people government and community organizing for social justice is what democracy looks like.  \nOur future can and will be charted by how we conceptualize democracy itself. Understanding\, expanding and sustaining democracy can perhaps lead to a bridging of this not so grand canyon of national divide. \nThis presentation focuses on the nature of democracy and offers a re conceptualization of this greatest of human inventions. \n  \nTim Kipp is a retired history and political science teacher of 39 years and a political activist since the 1960s. \n  \nMarlboro Resident and musician Jesse Lepkoff will sing the marching song “We Are Marching For Democracy” to open the meeting. \nThe WE CELEBRATE DEMOCRACY CIVIL RIGHTS FOR ALL Main Street banner will be hung at the library \n  \nwecelebratedemocracycivilrightsforall.org– \n Positive Nonviolent public action for democracy and civil rights  \nfor all people- 802 258 7045
