SUMMARY:The Unfinished Revolution: The Deep Work of Non-Violence - with Meg Mott
DESCRIPTION:America began with an armed revolution. According to the Declaration of Independence\, if the people were not happy with their government it was their right to “alter and abolish it.” But armed rebellion is a messy path for political reform. Surely\, there must be another way to change the government without taking up arms? \nIn 1963\, John Lewis envisioned a non-violent revolution that would achieve the ends of freedom and liberty without taking up arms. In this “unfinished revolution\,” current enemies are seen as future friends. Black and white\, men and women\, rich and poor\, he argued\, must learn to work together for their mutual benefit.  \nThis presentation will consider the theory and practice of Lewis’s unfinished revolution. We’ll consider the philosophical underpinnings to non-violence\, drawing on Gandhi’s satyagraha and Catholic understandings of natural law. We’ll also think practically about what it would take for us to engage in a revolution in which our current enemies are seen as future friends.\n—\nThis event is presented through a collaboration entitled ‘Examining American Identity and Leadership in a Changing World’ and comprised of Vermont Independent Media (The Commons)\, Windham World Affairs Council\, and Brooks Memorial Library with support from the Vermont Humanities Council. We have joined America 250\, a national initiative asking communities to plan for how to commemorate the 250th year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Its mission is to provide opportunities for all Americans to pause and reflect on our nation’s past & present\, honor the contributions of all Americans\, and look to the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.

SUMMARY:Mud Season Speaker Series with David Allen Sibley – Birding for Science: Uncovering the Mysteries of Our Feathered Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:In this final speaker series program co-hosted with Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center (BEEC)\, David Allen Sibley\, renowned ornithologist and illustrator\, invites backyard birders to step into the world of scientific discovery. While birdwatching is often seen as a leisurely hobby\, Sibley will reveal how everyday observations can contribute to cutting-edge science. Sibley will explore the exciting and often overlooked mysteries surrounding even the most common bird species. \nDrawing from his own work and experience\, Sibley will illustrate how birders can develop a deeper connection to the birds around them by becoming “scientists in their own backyards.” He’ll share examples of how birding has led to surprising discoveries\, such as new migration routes or shifts in species distribution caused by climate change. Sibley will stress the importance of collaboration in the birding community\, showing how every observation matters and how collectively\, birders are helping to build a richer\, more comprehensive understanding of bird life. \nIn the end\, Sibley’s talk will not only encourage birders to look at their backyard birds with fresh eyes\, but also inspire them to become active participants in the ongoing work to protect these fascinating creatures and the habitats they rely on. \nThe Sibley Guide to Birds\, published in 2000\, was the realization of a lifelong dream for David Allen Sibley\, who began painting birds when he was seven years old and has continued painting them for over three decades. The Sibley Guide to Birds contains over 6\,600 original illustrations by Sibley\, now recognized as America’s leading ornithologist/illustrator. The Sibley Guide to Birds became the fastest-selling bird book in history\, earning Sibley the moniker “the Beatle of birding” among the press. Stories about Sibley have run in The New York Times\, Audubon\, Time\, and Science\, and the author has appeared on ABC World News Tonight and on NPR’s Science Friday and The Connection. David Allen Sibley has been called the heir apparent to John James Audubon and Roger Tory Peterson\, and his long-awaited guidebook immediately became the gold standard for bird identification when it was published. \nRegistration is preferred\, nut not required. DESCRIPTION:Calling all LGBTQ+ families\, adults\, and youth! \nJoin the ACLU of Vermont\, Out in the Open\, and Brooks Memorial Public Library on Monday October 21st for an evening of queer community crafting! \nFolks are welcome to come and explore what freedom\, autonomy\, and joy mean to them through hanging out and making art. This collaborative project\, made up of a series of quilt-like panels\, acts as a vessel to uplift the voices of queer and trans Vermonters. Attendees can to contribute to a group panel\, create their own individual panel\, or simply craft in a way that feels best to them. \nSnacks & supplies will be provided and all ages are welcome! Stop by or join us for the entire time- we’d love to see you! \nThis queer community craft is a part of a national ACLU campaign which centers the voices of queer and trans people in America. It will culminate in the installation of a monument in Washington D.C. in the spring of 2025. The installation will be comprised of hundreds of quilt-like panels from across the country\, including those created right here in Brattleboro! This campaign acts as a reminder of the hope and possibility that exists when people have the freedom to be themselves.

DESCRIPTION:In Robin’s Song\, Robin\, dealing with loss and anxiety\, leaves Brooklyn to come to live in a small Vermont town with her cousin Darcey.  Through nature\, music and poetry\, the tweens bond\, while Robin learns skills to deal with her emotions. \nAuthor Lynn Levine will speak about why she wrote Robin’s Song and about her personal story of dealing with mental health challenges. \nCarol Compton\, Education Programs Director for Brattleboro Music Center\, will discuss how music both heals and empowers and their approach to helping students deal with their emotional self. \nAnn Gengarelly\, a poet\, who runs the Poetry Studio\, will talk about the ways poetry supports the emotional health of young people and empowers them. \nMichael Clough\, Executive Director of Museum of Natural History will talk about their approach to the topic of how nature heals and empowers\, specifically focusing on their approach to working with preteens.  He will bring a live animal. \nLynn Levine has worked with children and adults in classrooms and libraries and has taken thousands of people into the forest to share her love of nature. She finds that connecting people to the forest though teaching about the outdoors is a powerful way to help others feel the same. SUMMARY:Meg Mott: What does the First Amendment Ask of Us?
DESCRIPTION:The right to protest is one of the people’s most fundamental freedoms\, but what about speech that veers toward lawlessness or social disorder? During most of the 20th century\, governments put speakers in jail for creating a “clear and present danger.” Under that rule\, Eugene Debs went to prison for denouncing the first World War and Charlotte Whitney went to jail for belonging to the Communist Party.  As far as the government was concerned\, their sentences were too dangerous to be heard in public. \nIn 1969\, the Supreme Court changed the rule. Only words that caused “immanent lawless action” could be suppressed. In the Brandenburg decision\, the ACLU successfully defended a Klansman\, giving all of us greater freedom from government prosecution. The Black and Jewish advocates who came to the aid of Clarence Brandenburg were able to see the principles of free speech beyond his racist and anti-Semitic rhetoric. \nThe question for us post-Brandenburg  is\, How can we love the principle even when we don’t like the speech? \nCo-sponsored by Windham World Affairs\, Vermont Humanities\, The Commons\, Vermont Independent Media: Voices Live\, and Brattleboro Community Television.

SUMMARY:Are bans on encampments of unhoused people unconstitutional?  A Town Hall Exploration with Meg Mott
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, a three-judge panel in the 9th Circuit ruled that “the Eighth Amendment prohibits the imposition of criminal penalties for sitting\, sleeping or lying outside on public property for homeless individuals who cannot obtain shelter.” With that ruling\, Western states could only remove people who camp on public lands when there were beds in public shelters. A class action suit from a group of individuals who were unhoused in Grants Pass\, Oregon brought suit against the city for violating their constitutional rights. The Supreme Court agreed to hear the case\, Johnson v. City of Grants Pass\, this term. \nThis Town Hall considers the best arguments for and against the rights of persons who are unhoused to sleep in public places. Should all cities be restricted from enforcing no-camping ordinances in public parks? Do encampments injure residents who depend on access to green spaces? Does the 8th Amendment even pertain to this situation? Participants will have a chance to explore this complex issue with their neighbors and in the company of the Constitution\, led by scholar Meg Mott. \nA follow-up Community Discussion of this topic will be moderated by Paul Rodrigue on May 22nd from 6:00-7:30 pm. \nSponsored by Windham World Affairs Council\, Vermont Humanities and Compassionate Brattleboro as part of the Part of the 250th Commemoration of the United States. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pagan\, Jewish and Christian Women in the Roman Empire: Literary and Archaeological Evidence
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Women’s History Month\, Dr. Valerie A. Abrahamsen will present recent scholarly research\, which clearly shows that women had much larger roles in the early Roman Empire than previously acknowledged. In this slide presentation we will explore women in antiquity using literary and archaeological evidence. Women in Graeco-Roman cults\, Judaism\, and the early Jesus groups served as priestesses\, synagogue leaders\, missionaries\, apostles\, and possibly even bishops. Contrary to traditions that still impact us in the West\, we will see how ancient texts have been misinterpreted for centuries and how archaeology can not only expand our knowledge of the ancient world but also help promote justice and equality in our own society. \nValerie A. Abrahamsen holds the Master of Theological Studies and Doctor of Theology degrees in New Testament and Early Christian Origins from Harvard Divinity School. She is the author of over 100 articles\, reviews and book chapters in New Testament archaeology\, early church history\, women in antiquity\, and ancient goddess religion\, and she has published two books in these fields: Women and Worship at Philippi (1995) and Goddess and God: A Holy Tension in the First Christian Centuries (2006).
