SUMMARY:Vermont Humanities Snapshot event: Classic Films of the 50's
DESCRIPTION:The 1950s were a fascinating time for Hollywood films. Silent era film directors were in their prime\, and independent films were gaining a foothold. Exciting new stars such as Marlon Brando and Audrey Hepburn were making their mark while vital issues of the time such as juvenile delinquency\, conformity\, and racial attitudes were addressed\, however timidly\, while the shadow of the Hollywood blacklist loomed. Rick Winston will show clips from several films of various genres from that era and discuss their significance. \nIf you cannot join in person\, be sure to register to receive the livestream link here. \nAbout the Presenter\n  \nFrom 1972 to 1980\, Rick ran the Lightning Ridge Film Society in Montpelier. He owned and managed the Savoy Theater from its founding in 1981 until 2009. From 1999 to 2012\, he was Programming Director of the Green Mountain Film Festival. He has presented programs on film history throughout Vermont\, and is author of Save Me a Seat!: A Life With Movies. \nSponsored by Vermont Humanities and the Friends of Brooks Memorial Library

SUMMARY:Our Cars\, Our Bodies\, Our Earth
DESCRIPTION:Get myself a car\, I feel power as I fly\, Whoa now\, I’m really in control.\nIt all looks fine to the naked eye\, but it don’t really happen that way at all.. ~ The Who \nIn Vermont\, our cars appear to many of us as natural as our mountains\, moose and fall colors. However\, with climate change bearing down on our state\, carbon emissions are now seen by concerned Vermonters as the prime issue with our auto-centric culture. But could we be missing something even bigger? \nThis workshop probes the fascinatingly elusive psychology of the automobile and its pervasive influence on our vision of the world and place in it. We’ll focus on how the collective super-sizing of our bodies in cars (power\, weight\, speed\, size\, noise etc.) has profoundly transformed the integrity of our sacred relations to both the human and more-than-human worlds. Furthermore\, we will explore how this immense power is perhaps undermining our response to the most significant crisis we have ever faced – climate change. \nMost importantly\, we’ll embark on a world tour of remarkable efforts that are challenging automobilism – the unbridled and indiscriminate use of motor vehicles. We will consider how Vermont can greatly benefit from this burst of innovation (planning\, micromobility\, technology\, psychology and more) that is inspiring human-scale living\, a reconsideration of our place in the world and helping us to move beyond a 1950’s model of automobility and transportation consumerism. \nBio\nDave Cohen  is an integrative psychotherapist in Brattleboro specializing in ecopsychology. In 2016\,  Dave founded VBike\, a Vermont advocacy group dedicated to promoting new bike design and technologies for everyday mobility and providing free e-bike and e-cargo bike consultations to all Vermonters. His work is featured on numerous podcasts and highlighted in the internationally-screened cargo bike documentary Motherload. In 1994\, Dave founded Pedal Express in Berkeley\, CA\, a US pioneering bicycle delivery service utilizing a cargo bikes fleet.

SUMMARY:Can we protect religious liberties and LGBTQ+ rights? Discussion series with Meg Mott
DESCRIPTION:Constitution Wrangler Meg Mott will lead a three-part series on the contentious issue of school vouchers. Following a 2021 Supreme Court decision\, Vermont may no longer exclude religious schools from the voucher program. Some argue that this program will legitimize religious beliefs that discriminate against sexual minorities. Others argue that if parents can send their kids to private schools\, why shouldn’t they be able to send their kids to parochial schools? Under the laws of polarization\, those two positions are mutually exclusive. But under the pleasures of complex understanding\, there are myriad arguments to explore. \nSeptember 6: What the Court Said: The Supreme Court case that forced Vermont’s hand is Carson v. Makin. Besides considering the arguments of the Court and the dissent\, we’ll look at the practical implications of this decision and how activists on both sides are using it to increase polarization. \nSeptember 13: What We Could Say: Makin maps out the tension between religious liberties and non-discrimination\, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. We will explore a rhetorical ecosystem using the ideals of progressives\, libertarians\, and conservatives to consider both points of view. What would a conservative argument against the voucher program sound like? What about a progressive argument for the voucher program. \nSeptember 20: What We Need to Say: In this final class\, we’ll consider productive reframes to decrease polarization. What sort of language might convince progressives that school choice is in their best interests? What sort of language might convince conservatives that non-discrimination concerns are important to their cause? If persuasion is more pleasurable than polarization\, maybe we can kick this self-destructive habit!

SUMMARY:Brattleboro Conservation Commission
DESCRIPTION:Meeting and panel discussion\nin the Main Reading Room\n\nThis panel discussion is part of a public engagement process hosted by the Brattleboro Conservation Commission after a recent timber harvest at the Brattleboro’s Watershed Forest: Pleasant Valley Reservoir (PVR). It started with an excellent tour by Dan Healey\, the consulting forester for PVR’s Forest Management Plan\, which went into detail discussing the silvicultural treatments used in the most recent harvest and the goals they were meant to fulfill.\n\nHere\, with a panel consisting of consulting foresters\, Dan Healey and Andrew Morrison\, and consulting ecologist Daniel Dubie\, we zoom out to a broader view of forestry and forest ecology for a discussion of the landscape-scale benefits of – and threats to – our regional forests\, and how forestry can maximize those benefits and address those threats\, and (to a lesser degree) how management of PVR fits into that.

SUMMARY:Book Launch with Ann Braden
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the launch of Ann Braden’s newest middle grade book\, Opinions and Opossums! Ann is also the author of The Benefits of Being an Octopus\, and Flight of the Puffin\, and this new story is her most personal story yet. Opinions and Opossums is about finding a way forward when we’re not sure we believe what those around us believe\, and it’ll resonate with anyone who has ever questioned the status quo — or simply questioned themselves when they couldn’t find a way to fit in. \nAnn will read from the beginning of the book\, and will talk about her inspiration and the writing process.  You can ask her questions and explore the stories hidden within abandoned shopping carts. (Main character Agnes and her best friend Mo have multiple notebooks worth of stories from the perspective of shopping carts\, and it’s amazing what kind of stories emerge when you start asking questions!)

SUMMARY:The Czech Republic\, The European Union and the Rise of Populism
DESCRIPTION:The Windham World Affairs Council (WWAC) is honored to host\, researcher & author\, Dr. Martin Nekola PhD\, who will address populism through the lens of the Czech Republic and other countries of Central Europe. \nAs we navigate our way through the current iteration of populism in the United States\, Europe provides a cautionary tale. The current political situation in the Czech Republic\, a small country in the very heart of Europe\, historically considered the crossroads between the West and the East\, is the reflection of the latest developments in the entire European Union\, currently facing a serious crisis\, caused by Brexit\, a refugee crisis and the rise of populist tendencies. The lecture will address all these issues\, with the further focus on the Czech Republic and other countries of Central Europe\, as well as the impact on the United States and the global economy.  There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions and to consider global implications.
