DESCRIPTION:Constitution Wrangler Meg Mott will lead a three-part series on the contentious issue of school vouchers. Following a 2021 Supreme Court decision\, Vermont may no longer exclude religious schools from the voucher program. Some argue that this program will legitimize religious beliefs that discriminate against sexual minorities. Others argue that if parents can send their kids to private schools\, why shouldn’t they be able to send their kids to parochial schools? Under the laws of polarization\, those two positions are mutually exclusive. But under the pleasures of complex understanding\, there are myriad arguments to explore. \nSeptember 6: What the Court Said: The Supreme Court case that forced Vermont’s hand is Carson v. Makin. Besides considering the arguments of the Court and the dissent\, we’ll look at the practical implications of this decision and how activists on both sides are using it to increase polarization. \nSeptember 13: What We Could Say: Makin maps out the tension between religious liberties and non-discrimination\, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. We will explore a rhetorical ecosystem using the ideals of progressives\, libertarians\, and conservatives to consider both points of view. What would a conservative argument against the voucher program sound like? What about a progressive argument for the voucher program. \nSeptember 20: What We Need to Say: In this final class\, we’ll consider productive reframes to decrease polarization. What sort of language might convince progressives that school choice is in their best interests? What sort of language might convince conservatives that non-discrimination concerns are important to their cause? DESCRIPTION:Meeting and panel discussion\nin the Main Reading Room\n\nThis panel discussion is part of a public engagement process hosted by the Brattleboro Conservation Commission after a recent timber harvest at the Brattleboro’s Watershed Forest: Pleasant Valley Reservoir (PVR). It started with an excellent tour by Dan Healey\, the consulting forester for PVR’s Forest Management Plan\, which went into detail discussing the silvicultural treatments used in the most recent harvest and the goals they were meant to fulfill.\n\nHere\, with a panel consisting of consulting foresters\, Dan Healey and Andrew Morrison\, and consulting ecologist Daniel Dubie\, we zoom out to a broader view of forestry and forest ecology for a discussion of the landscape-scale benefits of – and threats to – our regional forests\, and how forestry can maximize those benefits and address those threats\, and (to a lesser degree) how management of PVR fits into that.

DESCRIPTION:Local writers Michael Nethercott and GennaRose Nethercott will share their views on storytelling\, offer readings\, and engage in lively literary banter. \nGennaRose Nethercott’s recent novel Thistlefoot has received numerous accolades from such sources as NPR\, Wall Street Journal\, and Book of the Month. Her first book\, The Lumberjack’s Dove\, a story in verse\, won the National Poetry Series. Whether authoring novels\, poems\, ballads\, or even fold-up paper cootie catchers\, her projects are all rooted in myth and folklore—and what our stories reveal about who we are. She tours nationally and internationally performing strange tales (sometimes with puppets in tow)\, and writes/researches for the supernatural podcast Lore. \nMichael Nethercott’s new novel The Ballad of Black Powder is his first foray into writing westerns. He’s the author of two mystery novels\, The Séance Society and The Haunting Ballad and has won several literary awards. His short stories have appeared in numerous periodicals and anthologies including Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine\, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction\, and Best Crime and Mystery Stories of the Year.  As a playwright and director he has helmed numerous local productions and was the originator of the Forest of Mystery theatrical tour\, which has become an annual tradition. \nBooks will be available for purchase\, and a signing will follow the event.

DESCRIPTION:The Windham World Affairs Council (WWAC) is honored to host\, researcher & author\, Dr. Martin Nekola PhD\, who will address populism through the lens of the Czech Republic and other countries of Central Europe. \nAs we navigate our way through the current iteration of populism in the United States\, Europe provides a cautionary tale. The current political situation in the Czech Republic\, a small country in the very heart of Europe\, historically considered the crossroads between the West and the East\, is the reflection of the latest developments in the entire European Union\, currently facing a serious crisis\, caused by Brexit\, a refugee crisis and the rise of populist tendencies. The lecture will address all these issues\, with the further focus on the Czech Republic and other countries of Central Europe\, as well as the impact on the United States and the global economy.  There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions and to consider global implications.

DESCRIPTION:Spencer Crispe is a 9th generation lifelong Vermonter from West Brattleboro. In an increasingly virtual world that is diving deeper into cyberspace\, Spencer promotes turning off the computer\, putting down the cell phone and engaging with the outdoors. He is an advocate of the many benefits from connecting with nature\, optimizing his free time mountain climbing and hiking. In 2020\, Spencer finished climbing all 770 mountains in the Northeast above 3000’ in elevation\, 8 years after starting on this goal. Recently\, he became the first known person from Vermont to climb Vermont’s 500 highest mountains. Join Spencer as he shares stories and photos from his many adventures in the Vermont mountains and wilderness\, many of which involved navigating to the top of peaks with no trails and few known climbers.  Tickets are free and are recommended.  No donation is necessary.

A ripping yarn filled with rivalry\, romance\, regret and redemption\, Thistlefoot has received accolades from readers and reviewers alike. \nGENNAROSE NETHERCOTT is a writer and folklorist. Her first book\, The Lumberjack’s Dove\, was selected by Louise Glück as a winner of the National Poetry Series. SUMMARY:Migration Pathways: Stories of Yesterday and Today
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Ingall\, creator of the project “Warlé\, Yesterday\, and Today\,” presents a slide talk and storytelling exercise inspired by the lives and legacy of Warren Kronemeyer and Leon Ingall\, a Vermont couple who were entrepreneurs and civic leaders in Townshend\, VT during the 1980 and 1990s. Leon was a refugee twice: first fleeing the Bolsheviks in 1918 and then again from the Nazis in the late 1930s. \nWarren and Leon’s remarkable story of love\, adversity\, caregiving\, and creativity provides a lens to explore similar and divergent experiences of today’s LGBTQ+ elders\, asylum-seekers\, refugees\, and migrants. The afternoon will conclude with a discussion from local organizations that include an overview of various immigration statuses and avenues towards residency; how these underrepresented communities invigorate cultural\, economic\, and social life; and how citizens can best support newcomers. \nAbout Andrew Ingall\nAndy Ingall has been working in arts\, culture\, and community engagement for over twenty years as a curator\, scholar\, writer\, performer\, and producer. He received a B.A. from Columbia College and an M.A. in Performance Studies from Tisch School of the Arts\, New York University. His collaborators have included cultural workers\, artists\, scholars\, faith leaders\, activists\, health care professionals\, and funeral directors. \n  \nAbout Kate Paarlberg-Kvam\nKate Paarlberg-Kvam (she/they) is Executive Director at the Community Asylum Seekers Project (CASP)\, headquartered in Brattleboro. Kate holds a PhD in Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and is a former postdoctoral fellow at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies\, where she conducted research on gender\, displacement\, and postwar reconciliation efforts. Kate works with CASP’s team of staff and volunteers to support twenty asylum seekers in Southern Vermont\, providing legal aid\, housing\, advocacy\, language learning\, and job placement services\, and cultivating a supportive community for people fleeing political violence and building new lives in this country. \nAbout Alex Beck\nAlex Beck (he/him) is a Brattleboro resident\, and holds a MA in Service\, Leadership\, and Management from SIT Graduate Institute. He has extensive experience in community development\, youth engagement\, and social entrepreneurism in rural economies in the U.S and abroad. Alex has resided in Windham County since 2012\, and has been at BDCC since 2015. He coordinates the Southern Vermont Workforce Center of Excellence\, and facilitates the creation\, organization\, and distribution of regional workforce and education opportunities for Vermonters throughout the Windham region. \nAbout Eduardo Meléndez\nEduardo Meléndez works at ECDC\, a national resettlement agency that has been empowering refugees and immigrants since 1983. He serves as their Community Engagement and Communications Manager\, connecting New Vermonters to resources that help them achieve stability and independence while they rebuild their lives. Born and raised on the island of Puerto Rico\, Eduardo previously worked with an organization that assisted low income and marginalized Puerto Ricans build their own businesses. He also worked as an independent photojournalist documenting the conditions of the Island’s poor and marginalized population including those affected by Hurricane Maria and the oppressive legacy of colonialism. \nAbout Abdullah\nAbdullah was born in Panjshir\, Afghanistan\, migrated to Pakistan and grew up there\, where he studied painting\, traditional calligraphy\, Persian Miniatures\, learned and taught English as a second language and graduated from high school. He moved back to Kabul Afghanistan\, completed his bachelors degree in computer science as well as worked as an IT Trainer for three years. He also painted wall murals with themes of social transformation and peace building with the artist collective\, Artlords as a part time profession.  When the Taliban took over the control of Kabul\, he had to flee and found himself in Brattleboro\, Vermont. He’s now rebuilding his life and finding new ways to make cross cultural collaborative murals with different regional artists using different mediums. He is also producing individual personal artwork using oil and acrylic paint on canvas using different genres. \nAbout the Fall Festival 2022\nJoin us in October during National Arts and Humanities Month for our Where We Land Fall Festival\, a remix of our Annual Fall Conference. Since its promulgation\, abolitionists\, suffragists\, civil rights leaders and the Black Panther Party have relied on the principles of the Declaration to persuade the nation in the direction of liberty and equality. \nIn the digital era\, social movements are more likely to rely on retweets than first principles\, protests instead of persuasion. DESCRIPTION:Kenneth Gloss\, proprietor of the internationally known Brattle Book Shop in Boston\, will give an in-person presentation to discuss the value of old and rare books. \nKen\, a rare book specialist and appraiser who is frequently seen on national TV\, will talk in part about the history of his historic bookshop (www.brattlebookshop.com/about)\, which goes back to circa 1825. He is a second-generation owner. Ken will discuss growing up in the book business\, show some of his favorite finds while enjoying “the thrill of the hunt\,” and explain how he appraises books and manuscripts. He has many fascinating anecdotes to share about private and institutional collecting as well as guidelines for building and maintaining a significant collection. There is also a Q&A session at the conclusion of his talk.  Following the talk and question-and-answer session\, Ken will give free verbal appraisals of books participants have on hand or will do so at his shop in Boston at a later scheduled date. \nPlease register in advance here or in person at the library. \nYankee Magazine Editor’s Choice Award for Best of New England\, the Brattle Book Shop is one of America’s oldest and largest antiquarian bookstores. 2022 is the 73rd year of Gloss family ownership. Kenneth Gloss succeeded his late father\, George Gloss\, a well-known figure both in Boston and national antiquarian circles.
