SUMMARY:Archer Mayor at the Library: Fall Guy
DESCRIPTION:In Fall Guy\, Archer Mayor’s newest Joe Gunther novel\, a body found in the trunk of a stolen car leads Gunther and his team to crucial evidence in an infamous unsolved case from years past. \nMeet author Archer Mayor at the library \nSaturday\, October 29th at 11:00 a.m. \nLearn about what the Chicago Tribune calls “the best police-procedural series being written in America.”  \nAbout Archer Mayor and the Joe Gunther series\nProtagonist Joe Gunther once worked for the Brattleboro\, Vermont\, police department and is now a Special Agent for the fictional Vermont Bureau of Investigation. Books about his case-solving prowess have appeared once a year since 1988 and have been published in five languages (if you count British). They routinely gather high praise from such sources as The New York Times\, Washington Post\, Los Angeles Times\, and the New Yorker\, often appearing on annual ten best lists. \nMayor’s novels are rooted in actual field experience. Closely aligned to the Gunther series are the author’s own experiences in Vermont working variously as a police officer and a firefighter/EMT over the past thirty years. Currently\, he still works as a medico-legal death investigator for the state’s medical examiner. This background adds depth\, detail\, and veracity to his characters and their struggles. \nArcher was honored with the 2016 Robert B. Parker Award. (Parker being “The Dean of Mystery Writers.”) In 2004\, he won the New England Independent Booksellers Association Award for Best Fiction—the first time a writer of crime literature has been so honored. He was inducted into Vermont’s Academy of Arts and Science\, and\, in 2012\, was awarded the Vermont governor’s award for Excellence in the Arts. In 2011\, Mayor’s 22nd Joe Gunther novel\, TAG MAN\, earned a place on The New York Times bestseller list for hardback fiction.

SUMMARY:What social movements could gain from the Declaration of Independence
DESCRIPTION:With its universal claims of equality and liberty\, the Declaration of Independence established the principles of a free nation. Since its promulgation\, abolitionists\, suffragists\, civil rights leaders and the Black Panther Party have relied on the principles of the Declaration to persuade the nation in the direction of liberty and equality. \nIn the digital era\, social movements are more likely to rely on retweets than first principles\, protests instead of persuasion. This presentation considers what today’s social movements might learn from the Declaration’s playbook. \nJoin scholar Meg Mott for an evening of lively discussion as we explore the topic together.

SUMMARY:A Deep Presence: 13\,000 Years of Native American History
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Brooks Memorial Library – October 26th from 6:30-8:00 pm\, 224 Main St\, Brattleboro\, VT 05301 – for a presentation from Dr. Robert Goodby about his life’s work affirming Indigenous relationships in this landscape. His new book will be available for purchase and you will be delighted to learn these lasting stories\, all the more needed as we look toward what is ahead. \nAlmost 13\,000 years ago\, small groups of Paleoindians endured frigid winters on the edge of a river in what would become Keene\, New Hampshire. This begins the remarkable story of Native Americans in the Monadnock region of southwestern New Hampshire\, part of the traditional homeland of the Abenaki people. \nTypically neglected or denied by conventional history\, the long presence of Native people in southwestern New Hampshire is revealed by archaeological evidence for their deep\, enduring connections to the land and the complex social worlds they inhabited. From the Tenant Swamp Site in Keene\, with the remains of the oldest known dwellings in New England\, to the 4\,000-year-old Swanzey Fish Dam still visible in the Ashuelot River\, A Deep Presence tells their story in a narrative fashion\, drawing on the author’s thirty years of fieldwork and presenting compelling evidence from archaeology\, written history\, and the living traditions of today’s Abenaki people. \nRobert Goodby is Professor of Anthropology at Franklin Pierce University. He earned his PhD in anthropology from Brown University and has over thirty years of experience excavating Native American archaeological sites in New England. He is a past president of the New Hampshire Archeological Society\, a former Trustee of the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum\, and served on the New Hampshire Commission on Native American Affairs. He has directed over three hundred archaeological studies authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act and his work has appeared in anthropological journals and in anthologies published by the Smithsonian Institution Press and University Press of New England. He has presented more than one hundred talks on his archaeological research for the New Hampshire “Humanities to Go” program\, and every fall speaks to students at the Keene Middle School about the Paleoindian Tenant Swamp Site. SUMMARY:What the Declaration Should Mean To Us\, with Meg Mott
DESCRIPTION:The Declaration of Independence starts with the assertion of “self-evident” truths and concludes with a pledge of solidarity through bloodshed. Abolitionists\, Suffragists\, and the Black Panther Party copied its words verbatim in their subsequent demands for justice. The protestors that stormed the U.S. Capitol yelled “1776!” a reference to the year the Declaration was drafted. If there is one thing that connects these disparate groups\, it is the promises of the Declaration. \nWe’ll consider how the words printed on a single parchment in 1776 continue to inspire demands for freedom and to justify violent insurrections. What constrains that audacious statement that the People have a right to “abolish” their government should it fail to deliver their freedoms? Does this Declaration still serve us in 2021? \nAfter twenty years of teaching political theory and constitutional law to Marlboro College undergraduates\, Meg Mott has taken her love of argument to the general public. Her award-winning series Debating Our Rights on the first ten amendments brings civil discussions on contentious issues to public libraries and colleges. \n
